Meet the producer – Corndale Farm

In conjunction with this months theme of Love NI Meat we catch up with new local producer Alastair Crown from Corndale farm. Located 20 minutes outside Derry City in the picturesque area of Myroe they are producing the first handmade chorizo in Northern Ireland.

With Alastairs interest in farming and a love for chorizo, this new enterprise was a no brainer! Demand has gone through the roof since he joined twitter back in April 2016, showing just how unique and special an offer it is – now everyone wants some!

The opening of their new shop in Limavady is imminent, and they have scaled up production to meet the huge demand from local restaurants, delis and customers. I’m very excited about it and have been treating my food tour guests to special samples of it. Alastair has even joined us on tour to tell everyone personally all about it and their plans for the future!

Five things you need to know about Corndale Charcuterie

#1. Corndale chorizo is made with pork shoulder, fennel, garlic, smoky paprika and Alastairs special secret ingredient. Its free from any artificial colours or flavourings.

#2. He farms free range rare breed Saddleback Pigs which give unique taste and texture. All pigs are fed on a natural cereal based diet and allowed to “root about” as nature intended.

#3. Alastairs #toptip is to try it in your scrambled eggs! It is a super handy ingredient to have in the fridge adding lots of flavour to the simplest of dishes.

#4. You can buy two types of chorizo – cooking chorizo or cured. Cured chorizo, takes approximately 30 days to make. It can be sliced and eaten immediately *warning – it’s extremely moreish!*

#5. Chorizo is just the start of a range of products he wishes to develop… he’s not giving too much away – stay tuned! You can follow them on twitter @corndalefarm or facebook @corndalefarmproduce

The final 10 of Foodie Destinations were announced on Thursday and delighted to say Derry is one of them! The title is awarded to places which have a cluster of high quality places to eat and also aims to highlight local tourism initiatives across the country.

The competition was originally run by the Restaurants Association of Ireland  but has become so popular it has become its own entity since last year, when Derry was runner-up! This year we are up against Dublin, The Burren, Kilkenny and Boyne Valley to name a few. 50% of the final decision is down to public vote so get voting…

The judges will be in the City on the 30th August and all our local producers, chefs, restaurateurs and foodies will be showcasing the very best the City has to offer and just why we are worthy winners…

This is exactly what the food tour is all about, demonstrating to both locals and tourists alike, the high quality of local produce, the passion of the locals and the wonderful foodie experiences available in the City.

From amazing Streetfood serving top class wagyu beef to Craft beers and award winning local cheeses we are spoilt for choice here. Every year new food businesses open and the standard pushes higher whilst providing outstanding food for excellent value for money.

To be crowned winner would be a massive accolade for the City and really help to give us the edge in promoting the offer we have here. Voting closes 9th September and the winner will be announced on 29th September. So please get voting and encourage all your friends and family!

If you are sharing any of your food experiences in the City on twitter or Facebook please include the hashtag #Foodiedestinations and show your support!
