5 Reasons to shop local this Christmas

You might be wondering what the big deal is about shopping local, and I know its so easy and convenient to get all your shopping at the big supermarkets or even get it delivered right to your doorstep. So I wanted to share with you, on the busiest shopping week of the year, just why I believe its SO important to keep our money local.

#1. You will help BOOST the local economy.

Research on spending shows that for every £1 spent with a small or medium-sized business 63p stayed in the local economy, compared to 40p with a larger business. Streets lined with independent shops and cafes tend to be attractive places to be and live. Towns with high levels of independents demand higher house prices, if we want to see more independents filling the vacant spaces within our City Centre and building on the uniqueness of Derry city then we must support those who are already there. Honestly this is so important. Not only are you supporting the economy but you are also getting…

#2. Unique and Quirky Gifts

The presents you buy locally will pretty much always beat those you’ll get in the multinationals. Made with love, handcrafted, local and quality items are sure to get the response you are hoping for from the recipient! And these gifts tend to have great stories behind them, the materials they’ve been made with, the loving business owner who has invested great time and effort into producing them and is generally only too happy to…

#3. Share advice and ideas

When you buy direct from independent retailers, you are buying from people who have a love and passion for what they do. Believe me – you HAVE to love what you are doing because its not easy to run your own business, and I have so much admiration for those who do. When you buy from these great people, 9 times out of 10 you are also having a good yarn with them and this social interaction has been declining with the rise of online shopping and supermarkets. When you buy from your local butcher or fishmonger, I love it when they give tips and ideas on ways to cook the meat or even better sometimes they throw in a little extra. (NEVER happens at a supermarket) you might even get a better deal! You are going to leave with a warm fuzzy feeling and full of Christmas spirit. These are when memories are made, these interactions and gifts are ALWAYS going to be remembered over a tacky, run of the mill soap set being churned out by the big stores.

#4. It makes ethical sense

Who’s guilty of buying blueberries and strawberries in December? All delicious and juicy looking with absolutely ZERO flavour! We’ve lost our sense of seasonality, but when you shop at your local farmers markets, butchers, greengrocers you can be pretty sure that the majority of the food has had a relatively short field to fork journey.

#5. Forget Clubcard and Nectar! We’ve got Independent Derry!

We now even have more reason to shop local with this new Independent Derry card which will entitle you to discounts and promos in lots of our local independent retailers and its a steal at only £7 – check it out here Don’t line the pockets of the big multinationals – invest your hard earned money locally and help the City to thrive and grow.

And of course you can support lots of our local food independents by buying one of our luxury food hampers. Packed full of local quality and delicious artisan products this gift really makes a statement and is sure to wow any foodie!
