Meet the Producer – Donegal Prime Fish

Donegal Prime Fish 1

Welcome to our new feature where every month we will highlight one of our amazing local producers. Keeping with the theme of the Year of Food and Drink – July is month of ‘Seas, Rivers and Loughs’ our first feature is DONEGAL PRIME FISH.

Given our geographical ‘prime’ location on the North coast we are so lucky to have some of the sweetest tasting fish, thanks to our cold atlantic waters. And back in the 1980s Reggie Ryan certainly knew it when he started Donegal Prime Fish. The business began in a humble shed beside Greencastle Pier but moved into Derry as the demand grew North of the border.

After an illness in 2006 sadly Reggie passed away, leaving behind his wife Dorothy and three daughters Emma, Grace and Laura. Determined to carry on with the business they immersed themselves fully in it. I caught up with Emma, Dorothy and their manager Patsy to find out the top 5 ‘fishy’ things you need to know about this family business…

  • They handle between 7 and 8000 kilos of fish weekly from their premises at Skeoge. The fish comes directly off the boats at Greencastle, is prepared at Skeoge and delivered straight to restaurants! Location Map here
  • They won a Great taste award  for their Irish Silver Smoked Salmon using dust from Oak trees so synonymous with Derry.
  • They sell what Dorothy jokingly refers to as ‘the incredible shrinking fish’! Orange Roughy, which when cooked dramatically shrinks in size and is one of the most unusual fish they stock, along with blue mouth red fish.
  • Dorothys favourite fish dish is fresh haddock, pan fried. She rightly believes in keeping keeping it simple so you can taste the full flavour and quality of the fish . Emma favours lemon sole, although she also revealed a penchant for some of our Fiorentinis gorgeous fish and chips!
  • They supply to the majority of restaurants on the ‘Made in Derry’ food tour. So if you want to taste the amazing fresh fish, cooked by our wonderful local chefs – come on tour! Available dates here

A Legenderry Week

boats

This week sees the return of the Foyle Maritime festival and the Clipper boat race to the City. We have hosted the Clipper crews on a number of occasions now and it has always been a huge success, with people coming out in their droves to see the boats, visit the market and join in with the festivities. Its one of the best weeks in the City’s calendar of events! In particular I’m looking forward to…

#Boats arrival

This is always such a buzz in the air as everyone eagerly awaits the arrival of the boats into the City and to give all the crews a warm Derry welcome! Check out this video of the boats arriving back in 2012 here

#Clipper Kitchens

These will be set up in Ebrington and comprise of cookery demonstrations from Celebrity Chef Jean-Christophe Novelli on Friday 15th July, as well as lots of demos from local chefs (including Brian McDermott and Ian Orr). There will also be a food pavillion at which you will be able to sample some of our finest regional produce with over 40 local artisan producers.

There will also be a Flavours of the Foyle special seafood zone and you will be able to sample food from 12 of our local restaurants and eateries!

#Shippy of Culture

The sippy of culture team are joining up with RoCo to open a pop up bar along the quay during the festival. This promises to be a super addition to the line-up, with lots of craft beers and all in the beautiful surroundings of RoCo along the River Foyle. Sure you couldn’t beat that!

#Maritime Markets

These markets along the quay are at the heart of the festival, sample everything from local food to food from right across the globe and soak up the atmosphere as you dine al fresco!

#The People

There’s no doubt about it, its the people that make our  visitors feel so welcome and our events such as success. The Clipper festival never fails to bring everyone out (we are expecting upwards of 100,000) and the craic is always ’90’. Come along and see for yourself! The full programme is here

Music City

We are spoilt for choice for things to do as we also have Music City on – The Villagers are kicking it off in the Glassworks tonight, and later in the week David Kitt, Soak and our own Ruth McGinley will be performing to name a few. Check out the full programme here.

Get out and get enjoying our wonderful City! 🙂

Looking ahead to the rest of the summer, the food tours resume the weekend after Clipper festival. I’m so delighted to say the tours have been a huge success to date, most importantly there’s been lots of happy faces and lovely reviews but also and very fundamental to my personal aspirations for the tours – people have visited new restaurants, sampled lots of local food and produce they weren’t aware of previously, not only this they revisited the places I’ve shown them and bought the produce I introduced them to on tour. Also there have been lots of new friends and connections made. Win win! Love it! If you’d like to come and experience the very best of Derrys food and drink in the company of lovely like minded people then the…

Is a #madeinderry food tour for me?

If you aren’t sure whether to come on a tour, read on to find out why you should!

  1. Experience the best of Derry’s food and drink scene all in one afternoon. You will visit 6 eateries and a pub (of course!) You will taste over 30 different food and drinks. You will need to bring your appetite and leave the car at home! *some clues to where we visit in photos below!*
  2. Learn about all the amazing local producers we have here. It is unbelievable the standard of local produce we have in the North West.
  3. To do something different. An alternative to a night out, or a pub crawl, a #madeinderry food tour gets you ‘under the skin’ of our beautiful city. Bespoke and private tours are available for hens/corporate and tourist groups.
  4. To met the people behind the food – chefs, brewers and owners. Connect with the passionate people in the city. Theres nothing like getting to know the person behind the food, learning their story and feeling their passion.
  5. Met new people. We take a good sized group on each tour and by the end of the four hours lots of new friends are made.
  6. To find out about the City through the eyes of a local! The food tour developed from a desire to connect people to our beautiful city through the amazing food scene. The hospitality sector has grown so much in the past few years and I think we should be shouting more about just how good it is!
